Glossary

Fax machines are used to send a digital document content through the telephone network to some other distant destination. These fax machines are very much needed in the modern environment where the document transfers need to be done at a faster pace and in a quicker time period. These fax machines are now coming along with printer, scanner and copier as a 3 in 1 technology that too at a much affordable prices. Companies like Samsung, HP, Canon and Epson are some of the leading manufacturer of this 3 in 1 technology machines.

The various glossary items in fax machines are,

Analog Copier:

The Analog copier is present in the fax machines which use the combination of light, lenses and mirrors to reflect the image of a document onto a photo receptor for the process of printing.

Auto Redial:

This auto redial option is available in almost all the fax machines where a number last dialled will be automatically redialled if the transmission did not go through.

Automatic Fax:

Automatic fax can be defined as the process of transmitting the fax even without picking up the handset or pressing the hook button.

Back-Up Reception Mode:

According to this facility available, if a call is not answered by the operator after several rings then the fax machine answers the incoming call automatically.

Beep Tone:

Beep tone is the sound that the machine keys make when they are pressed. The beep tone also occurs when the error occurs during the faxes are sent or received.

Call Back Message:

Call back message is a feature which sends a fax message the recipient to call.

Caller ID:

The caller ID displays the number of the incoming call or the person who calls in the LCD display.

Cancel Job:

The cancel job permanently cancels the assigned job.

Contrast:

The contrast button helps in adjusting the darkness and lightness of the document to be sent.

Delayed Transmission:

Delayed transmission allows the document to be sent at a later time by assigning a time and it is necessary that the machine needs to be ON for the documents to be sent.

Fax Forwarding:

The fax forwarding allows a pre-restored document to be sent to a pre registered fax number.

Fax Tones:

Fax tones are the signals that are sent and received during the fax transaction.

Fax / Phone Changeover:

This change over refers to the ability of machines to decrypt between the fax and voice calls accordingly.

Fax Reservation:

Fax reservation allows the machine to accept the next document in the ADF for sending while it is still receiving.

Gray Scale:

Gray scale refers to the levels of gray that a document has. Most of the fax machines have 16, 32 or 64 gray scale levels.

HP:

Hewlett Packard which is one of the leading Multinational Companies. HP is famous for its laptop, desktops and also for the fax machine they manufacture. Most of their fax machine comes in as a combination with copier and printer as a 3 in 1 scheme. .

Help Key:

The help key prints the programming information for quick reference. This acts like a user guide and helps the user to solve the issues.

Interrupting:

Interrupting is a feature available in the fax machines which helps to put a waiting job on hold while the polled job is performed.

LCD:

LCD is the Liquid Crystal Display which is present on the control panel on the machines, this LCD screen shows the information such as the date, time, phone number, etc.

Manual Fax:

Manual faxing is present in all the fax machines which help in transferring the fax message once the handset is picked or the hook is pressed before the phone number is pressed.

Memory Status List:

The memory status list hold a number of documents on the queue for the retrieval, it also specifies the memory it occupies and the memory left still for the usage.

Message Center:

Message center present in the fax machine has a built in answering machine which stores documents and voice messages for automatic answering.

One-Touch Dial:

One touch dial allows the user to assign phone numbers to each keys on the control panel which helps in the easy dialling of the number.

Out of Paper Reception:

All the fax machines are provided with paper for the document to be printed, this features helps the documents to be received and store in the memory even when it is out of paper.

Overseas Mode:

Overseas mode is available in most of the fax machines. It helps in the temporary setting changes to the device that lets it send to overseas phone systems.

Paging Notification:

Paging notification prompts the machine to dial the registered pager telephone number if a fax or a voice message which is already stored in its memory.

Pause:

Pause option is present in all the fax machines that cause a 3.5 second delay while dialling with one-touch and speed-dial numbers.

Photo Mode:

Photo mode in the fax machines helps the user to send/receive the photos without any change in the resolution.

Printer Alarm:

Print alarm is a notification which is activated when the fax is not able to print the document received.

Remote Activation:

Remote activation allows a transfer of fax call from any extension phone when it is not connected directly to the machine.

Remote Access Code:

This acts like a security code which allows you to activate the machine from another phone.

Scanner:

The scanner in the fax machines helps the original document to be converted into an electronic image.

Toner:

Toner is a plastic and carbon based substance that forms the image on the paper. Toner can be a part of mono-component, or dual- component that has the appearance of a dry powder.

Thermal Paper:

These are the chemically treated roll paper that is used in thermal fax machines.

TAD Interface:

TAD interface allows an external telephone device to be added to the same phone line as that of the fax machine.
