Fax machine is a device that sends fax documents which is passed over a sensor that converts the image into digital format. It is transmitted through phone lines to the receiving fax machine which it converts to an image and prints it out. In printing technology we have various types of machines like thermal fax which uses heat-sensitive paper, ink-jet or laser printer engine.
When you are going to purchase a fax machine, you must look for the unit that has multifunction in it. It may include computer printing too. If you already have a printer at home with high-quality, then you just need fax machine not multifunction device, it’ll be less expensive.
Buy thermal paper or thermal film transfer model if you’re just going to send fax. If you’re just going to receive the fax then prefer to buy high paper-tray capacity with an ink-jet or laser print engine. See if the unit has high memory capacity.
Look for high transmission speed so that you can receive or send large number of faxes at a speed of 33.6 Kbps. In most common device its top speed is 14.4Kbps. High transmission will lessen the long distance and telephone charges.
• While you go for purchase, decide the type of fax machine you need and see the quality of printing the unit provides.
• Make sure if the unit can print 64 shades of grey when you receive and copy both text and images.
• See the speed dial of the machine that you need.
• See the capacity of the model, its ability to store the received faxes.
• Look for additional feature like delaying transmission, ability to ‘poll’.
Here is a glossary of some terms used in the fax machine:
• Broadcasting feature in the machine allows you to send one fax to multiple numbers.
• Transmission speed is measured in Kbps (Kilo Bits per Second).
• The machine with one-touch dialling is a programmable feature which stores the commonly used fax numbers.
• Plain paper, it’s a flat printer paper that the fax machine prints on common.
• Resolution, the sharpness of the printed image is measured in dot per inch.
• Thermal paper fax machine prints on rolls of paper through heat transfer.
• Multifunction features like scanning, copying etc are also available in the fax.
