Fax can be considered as a fore runner of modern day communication. A fax is a way of transmitting the text and pictures over telephone lines. It resembles small photocopiers. But a fax machine needs a telephone connection to work with. It sent the messages or pictures to the fax machine number dialled in it just as you make a call from the phone. After the connection is made, an electronic scanner moves along the page as in Photostat or scanner machine and converts the image into a set of electric signals. These signals travel over the telephone line and is received in the fax machine in seconds. It transmits text and pictures over telephone lines. A fax machine is some what the same as a telephoto.
Fax machines are very useful for banks, news services, law firms, business people as documents can be sent quickly in seconds. Now fax machines are very small in size and some business people use small desktop fax machines or portable models at home or when they travel.
A plain paper roll is used to in the fax machine. At first the fax machine had only the facility to receive the faxes but now one can attend calls, check documents, check memory etc in the same machine. The machine lets us know when the fax is full or when memory is full or when the system is busy. Errors are shown and when the paper is jammed it lets us know. Auto answer system, built in voice mail, recording mic etc are other facilities. Now a fax machine comes with a phone attached, so that one can use it as a main telephone too. They are highly configurable also.
Faxes are not only useful but cheap for people who do correspondences from place to place, to towns, countries or even to different parts of the world. Now the machines are smaller, less costly but very fast. There are a number of choices for a fax machine nowadays.
